Black Hair Highlights
If you have dark to black hair, you should not go more than 3 shades lighter than their natural color with highlights. In terms of lowlights, tones of red and tortoise (a blend of copper and gold) colors work best.

I have black hair and light brown skin. I've been getting highlights for 3 years (new highlights/retouch right before school). The first time I had blondish highlight(s) and they looked okay. The years after I got a dark red/purple and it looked really pretty. I also got a brown/red color. I recommend natural colors because otherwise it will fade to a really ugly color.

Dark Black hair looks awesome with dark blue highlights. You barely notice the blue unless you hit the light just right and it adds a sheen "highlight" to your hair.

Hair Highlight Tips
Hair Highlight Trends for Summer 2006
Last summer's blond look of antique gold is toned down for 2006. Look for shimmering hair highlights of gold, mother of pearl and oyster that glisten and shine in light neutral beige colors for the golden girls.
Brown Hair Highlights
If you have brown hair, you should lightens naturally, it has to go through shades of red first. Thus red lowlights make your hair highlights look much more natural on brunettes.
How to Choose Highlights That Complement Your Coloring?
Hair Highlights offer hair a sun-kissed glow and shimmery radiance. Vary the shade of blond depending on your skin color and the effect you'd like to achieve.
Blonde Hair Highlights
If your hair is light brown or even dark blonde, blonde hair highlights can add a tone of depth to your hair. You can weave in up to 3 different types of colors. Ask a pro about lowlights as well. If you have blonde hair, darker lowlights add more contrast.
Tips for Blonde Highlighting
Blonde highlights works with almost any hairstyles, long or short, straight or wavy. The highlights add a touch of chic, edgy, fashion flair to your overall look. Therefore, it's important to choose the right shade of blonde highlights and once you got your hair blonde highlighted, proper care should be taken so that they stay beautiful and last long.
Trends in Color
These days, pretty much anything goes when it comes to hair color. Not too long ago reds were all the rage, and everyone from movie stars to high schoolers sported a flame top. It got a little predictable, didn't it?
